Salmon River 2007 Season

Fish the Salmon River and other Lake Ontario Tributaries for

Trophy

King Salmon, Coho Salmon, Steelhead, and Brown Trout

Join me for a day on the water and fish for all of these great trophy fish.

September and October are Salmon Season and the days book fast for these huge hard fighting fish so make your reservation early.

Here are some pictures from my 2007 season

12-30-07 - George O'Brien and I went out for a few hours this AM. There are more fish in the river this year than I have seen in years. Even on a slower bite day like today we managed to get into a few fish and had some fun fishing ourselves for a change. Here is a picture of George with one of the fish he landed. Hey George open your eyes! OK Here's one with his eyes open.

12-28-07 - My old friends Mike and Ray joined me today to try their hand at some winter Steelhead. What a day it was The fish gods not only smiled but they actually grinned. The fishing was reminiscent of the early 90's. This has been a terrific season for us for the Steelhead. There are fish top to bottom on the river and there are very good numbers of them.

12-27-08 - John and his daughter Jill joined me today for Jill's first ever Steelhead trip. It was a very good introduction to Steelheading. She managed to land her first fish of 13 lbs and continued to fight and land others. Here are a couple of pictures. Congrats Jill.

12-26-07 - Ryan Miller wanted to buy his dad a special Christmas present so he bought him a trip on the river. I just happened to be the lucky guide. What a special present it was as the fish gods looked down from above and just grinned as wide as they could. What a day! Here are a few of the pictures from can only be described as a tremendous day on the water.

12-21-07 - Andy and Dave drove up from Syracuse this morning to join me for a day on the water and although it started out a little slow we had a great time and ended up getting into some nice fish.

12-20-07 - My good friend Ken Forristall came up and we spent the day on the water together. Ken had not been up since Salmon Season and was a little bit rusty but he finally managed to land this one. Bye the way "Hi Melissa" from Ken.

12-19-07 - Ken Link drove up last night to fish with me today and the fish god's smiled on him big time. He had tied a small, #14, soft hackle that worked right from the get go but unfortunately was to small a wire and we bent the hook out rather than land the fish. However we did manage one in the Bovines on one of the hooks that I use. Anyway here is the one picture for the 9 fish that he fought today.

Ken, you need to start using double X wire hooks like I do!!!!!!!

12-14-07 - Yours truly got to go out and fish for an hour today. I was 2 for 2 today in the one hour that I was out. There are allot of fish in the river this year and they are still coming in in good numbers so there is a mix of chrome and darker fish throughout the river.

12-12-07 - Eric, Phil and John joined me today for what turned out to be a memorable day on the river. We had a blast and John landed his first Steelhead. Here are some pictures.

12-06,07-07 - Ken and Jim from Vermont made their first trip to the Salmon River and I had the pleasure of guiding them, for 2 days. The first day we had some nasty weather with temps starting out around 10 and then we had about 9 inches of snow. But fish bit so we didn't care much. Both men hooked fish but Jim was unable to get them to the net although it was really close a couple of times. Here are a couple of pictures of Ken with some of the fish he landed.

11-30-07 - It was Cory's first ever trip to the Salmon River and the fish gods where good to him. He landed a bunch of fish today and fought many more. Here are a few pictures.

11-29-07 - I fished a group of 5 Italians with another guide today and what a great time we had. Everyone in the group landed at least one fish and most landed more not even counting the many fish fought and lost. It was a great day of teaching for me and learning for them. Here are a few of the pictures from today.

11-28-08 - I fished the lower fly zone for 3 hours with a couple of local boys and the action was OK. Between the 3 of us we had 5 fish on in the time that I was there. The fishing in the rest of the river was very good with one of my friends reporting having a total 14 hookups for his guests today. I will be working tomorrow myself so I will update the report tomorrow night.

11-24-07 - I had Ken Link and his two sons Alex and Ryan out today. It was a very cold start about 11 degrees before the sun came out I expected the bite to be slow in the beginning but was I wrong. The fish started biting almost as soon as we started casting. The tough part was getting a good hook set and keeping them on. We did manage to land some nice fish though and here are some of the pictures from the day.

11-20-07 - I have a few days off this week but will put up reports if I get out and about on the river. Here's wishing everyone a great Thanksgiving holiday.

11-18-07 - It was another great day for Angelo and Steve. We had plenty of hookups and managed to land some big fish. Here are pictures of the best for the day. I estimated them at 15 or better each.

11-17-07 - I had a few days of so I have not posted a report but today Angelo and Steve joined me for turned out to be a great day on the water. We where blessed with a high pressure and the fish where biting well. In fact they enjoyed the day so much they inquired about tomorrow and as I was open I gave the Fall special price for the second day of only $200. Hopefully I will be posting another good report for tomorrow. Anyway here are a couple of pictures from today.

11-12-07 - Sasha and Bill where my guests today and we had a decent day with Bill hooking his first ever Steelhead and Salmon. Bill landed the salmon but the steelie got off.

11-11-07 - Gary Roulston joined me today and we fished the Spey rods. The fish where a little tougher today than yesterday but we managed to land a few. Here is Gary with a nice fish.

11-10-07 - John Aiello and his son Mike spent the day with me and what a day it was. The fish gods smiled on them today and we had a great time.

11-09-07 - Neil Dunkelman joined me today with the intent of learning how to use the Spey rod and catching some fish. We started in the DSR where Neil proved to me that he had been a long time fly caster and managed to pick up the rudiments of the Spey cast in a very short period of time. However the fish did not come in this morning and I suggested that we take a quick float of the top of the river if we wanted to get into some fish. We wound up only hitting about 4 fish but they where HOT and gave Neil a really hard time resulting a 0 for 4 end result. But Neil was very happy with the day and will be back to use what he learned.

11-08-07 - Greg Rice joined me today for a day on the water and we had a great time. The fishing was slow to start with a 3 degree drop in the water temperature overnight and it took the fish a while to get the bite on but we managed to do OK when it finally happened. Here are some of the pictures from today.

11-06-07 - Charles and his son Chris joined me today and although the barometer drop we still manage a very decent day.

Here are a couple of pictures.

11-05-07 - Eric and his son Wyatt fished with me today and we had a very good day. Started a little slow but once the sun got on the water we enjoyed a very decent bite for the rest of the day. Her are a couple of pictures.

11-04-07 - Dan and Pete came out to join me on their first ever trip to the Salmon River and what a trip it was. Dan had the hot rod today and was so excited I wasn't quite sure if his hands had stopped shaking even at the end of the day. He ended the day with a beauty of a Brown. Here are a few pictures.

11-02/03 - 07 - Did not fish myself the past 2 days but the fishing has been good top to bottom. I have received good reports from the DSR as well as good reports from the top of the river. I will be out tomorrow and will have another posting when we are done.

11-01-07 - Dave Thomas drove up from the Syracuse area to fish with me today. Although a long time resident his busy schedule had kept him from ever testing the waters up here or even fishing for the last 15 years. I made it my goal to teach him as much as I could in a single outing. The wind was relentless in the afternoon but we had a decent morning and Dave landed his first Salmon River Steelhead.

10-30-07 - Biff and Fred drove out from Vermont to fish with me today and the fish gods certainly smiled on us. They got into a good number of fresh Steelhead. Here's a couple of pictures from today.

10-28-07 - Ken and his son CJ joined me today for their first ever salmon river fishing trip. We had a great day a got into a number of steelhead. Here are a few of the pics from today.

10-26/27-07 - Was not on the water but reports are that the fishing has gotten very tough with the higher water flows the leaves on the edge of the banks have been washed into the river creating very tough fishing conditions. This should pass in a day or two and we should have more normal conditions. I will be on the water tomorrow and will file a report then.

10-25-07 - I had the day off today and did not fish. Reports from the bottom of the river where good. The upper river is still a little slow.

10-24-07 - Mike and Ray joined me today and we had a good start on the bottom of the river. The fishing was consistent there and we went upstream and used the boat for the afternoon but I did not see allot of steelhead and we did not hook any fish on the top of the river. Here are a couple of pics from the day.

10-22-07 - I have a couple of days off so I will not be on the river. I need to catch up on my fly tying, email, and other stuff. With the increased water flows the fishing has certainly gotten better throughout the river. We have seen very good numbers of Steelhead entering the system every day for well over a week now and I am starting to turn my attention to targeting these fish as they are considered by many, as well as myself, to be the premier fish of this fishery. I will update my report in a couple of days..

10-21-07 - I had the Link family out today. It was a very good day with as many steelhead hooked as salmon. Here are a couple of pictures of the boys.

10-20-07 - Another great day on the river with Rob, Mike, and Dennis. The fish moved well today hooking about as many Steelhead as we did Salmon.

10-19-07 - Day off today but I can however report that they will be releasing a flow of 185 this weekend starting at 7 PM this evening.

10-18-07 - Mike and Steve where my guests today and we started out with a Steelhead blitz in the AM and then tapered off to some Kings for the late morning. Here are a few pic's

10-15,16-07 - I fished with Tom Lacko and friends for the past two days and it was decent with some nice kings being landed as well as a couple of steelhead.

10-14-07 - Cliff and Joe fished with me again today and although it was again a slower day they still managed a couple of nice fish.

10-13-07 - I had Cliff and Joe out today. It was a slower day and they where beginners' but Joe managed to land his first King.

10-12-07 - It was another decent day. I have been guiding Jim and Stephen Morgan for the past 2 days. We got the full Salmon River Slam today with a Brown, Steelhead, King Salmon and a Coho Salmon. I will try to get the time to post the pictures tomorrow.

Here are a few pictures from the last 2 days

10-11-07 - It was a decent day picking at a small steady stream of fish all day.

10-09-07 - Tony V and his good friend Anthony joined me for a day on the river today. It was a fantastic day with a strong movement of fish all day.

10-08-07 - Brian Morris and his friend Scott came to try the Salmon river for the first time today. There was a slow steady movement of fish all day.

10-06/07-07 - My guests Don Jamie and Derrick Roy had a terrific 2 days on the water with me. Here are a couple of pic's from this trip.

10-05-07 - I fished low on the DSR today and as has been the norm for me in this section of the river we had to wait for the sun to get on the water before we had any substantial fish movement. But we did have a decent number of fish move and we had a good day.

10-04-07 - I fished the mid section of the DSR today with Chris and we had some decent action but it wasn't crazy. Here's a couple of photos from our outing.

10-03-07 - I fish the Mowery's and friends 2 days every salmon season and this was the second of two terrific days on the water. We fished the lower DSR today and per the norm it started out a little slow but picked up as the morning went on and got really good in the afternoon. Here are a couple of more pictures from this two day outing.

10-02-07 - I had the Mowery's out today and what a great day it was. It wasn't crazy but it was nice a steady all day with a mix of King's, Coho's, Brown's, and Steelhead. Here are some of the pic's from the day.

10-01-07 - I had Bill and Dan out today. They had really wanted a float trip but  explained to them that there was not enough water for that and the reluctantly agreed to a wade trip. Boy where they glad they did. We had a terrific time and landed some great fish. Here's a couple of pic's from the day.

09-30-07 - What a difference a day makes. It was a day that most dream of with more than enough fish for everybody.

09-29-07 - George, Steve, and I worked a group of 9 today. It was a decent day with a slow but steady movement of fish and the boys had a great time. Here are a couple of pictures of Scot, one of our guests

09-28-07 - Bucky and his son Peter joined me today and we a very good day with a slow but steady movement of fish in the DSR. Here are a few pictures from our outing.

09-27-07 - Today we fished the bottom of the DSR. It was a moderate to slow movement day but we had a great time and fought and landed some fish. Here are a few pictures from the day.

09-25-07 - It was another slow movement day on the bottom of the river but we managed enough action to keep Ken happy. He started the day landing a nice Steelhead, we muffed the picture, and ended it with this nice King Salmon.

09-23-07 - It was a slow day today in the DSR but we still managed to watch A J Bavaro land his first king. Here is a picture of A J and his dad Anthony. Good job A J!

09-21-07 - As my guest Jamie and I walked into the river this AM we discussed what type of day it might be. I told him that yesterday was pretty good and that I was hopeful to see some movement today. At the end of the day Jamie declared that this day had outstripped his fondest hopes. Here are a few pictures of some of the fish that Jamie landed today.
